In Bangladesh the suborder is comprised of Jacana, Painted Snipe, Oystercatcher, Avocet, Stilt, Ruff, Godwit, Stone Curlew or Thick-knee, Prantincole, Lapwing, Plover, Sandpiper, Snipes, Stints, Dunlins and Woodcock, Common Teal, Common Pochard , Mallard, Common Coot etc. By and large the shore birds are small to near medium birds, with long legs, long necks and long bills. One tenth of Bangladesh's more than 600 species of birds are waders, of which about ten per cent are resident and the rest are migratory. Most of the shore birds are winter visitors while some are passage migrants and there are certain species that land here on transit. It was formerly placed into the genus Sterna, which now is restricted to the large white terns. The Little Tern breeds in colonies on gravel or shingle coasts and islands.
